New Life for Naiad 6000
Wanaka Lakes Coastguard has recently launched their latest rescue boat, a Naiad 6000. Naiad enthusiasts may recognise the numbering as one of the early builds, in fact this boat is over 20 years old.
It began life as a whale watching boat in Kaikoura, carrying passengers out to sea on the spectacular journey. Next it went south to Fiordland and served as a tender for a large fishing charter vessel, then up to Christchurch, where a new set of engines were fitted and a trailer custom made. After that it was used for paua diving in the Marlborough Sounds and on the Westcoast. It was also part a reseeding program for paua in the Marlborough sounds.>
For its new life it has been refurbished inside, the pontoons have been coated and coloured with a UV protection system and has been fully surveyed and a new electronics system has been installed. Structurally it is in good shape and with the refurbish it is now ready to serve the Wanaka Boating community.
It is great to see that even after 20 plus years of commercial service Naiad’s are still out there working hard and continuing to repay the investments made in them.
