Akarana - Auckland Pilots Naiad 15.0m
Akarana was constructed for the Auckland Pilots in 2007. It built upon the huge success of Lion Rescue, Auckland Coastguard's 14.6m Naiad Rescue vessel launched in 2003. It is now creating it's own wave with eight more Pilot boats constructed on the same design.
In the development of Akarana, Naiad drew on its experience from previous Pilot boats constructed and expert input from the Auckland Pilots. This produced a craft designed specifically as a Pilot boat from top to bottom which is evident in it's functionality and appearance.
The hull's fine entry bow and 20 degree deadrise gives Akarana excellent sea keeping abilities and a soft ride in the harbour sea conditions. In the rougher water outside of the harbour, Akarana continues to provide safe predictable handling and deals with head seas with speed and ease.
The hull is tapered toward the stern to allow an easy departure from alongside ships. The 700mm diameter fenders have a EVA foam core and a hard wearing polyurethane coating to withstand the constant impact and wear during Pilot transfers. There is no pre-planing hump so full control is available even at those awkward speeds of around 10 - 15 knots where the hull resistance is high and so is the prop slip.
The walkways around the cabin are wide and clear of tripping hazards. The safety rail system is fitted on both sides and along the front of the cabin, with ample hand rails. The Pilot house has plenty of windows giving exceptionally good all round visibility, inside is seating for two crew and four pilots. The seats are KAB Patrol 525 with suspension, lumbar support and arm rests.
Suspension seating together with the soft riding Naiad hull significantly reduces crew and passenger fatigue during travel, allowing Pilots to perform at their peak when they arrive alongside their ship. A leading edge electronic installation adds to the whole package.
Akarana is powered by twin 425 Kw (570 Hp) Caterpillar C12 marine diesels coupled to ZF 325 gearboxes with Henley 4-blade Yellow Fin propellers. This gives a service speed of 25 knots (full load) and a max speed of 32 knots (light ship).
Akarana is a boat with a future, the continued interest and sister ships being built is proof of the effort put into this design to be a safe, comfortable and efficient Pilot boat.
